Adam’s First Days as an NQT!

First day

Inset – meet the rest of the team and get a general sense of our aims for the year. Get nervous about teaching after all the summer off (maybe I have forgotten how to teach).  Meet teachers from other departments and other NQTs/ITTs. Get my schedule and start visualising calling on people to answer questions in the first lesson (every teacher does that, don’t lie).  Still have nerves about that first lesson.  Meet my co tutor, start to bond over pop culture. Figure out how to get the photocopier to work.  Figure out how to call IT support to fix photocopier.  Become quick friends with the support staff. Go home and practice the opening speech you will give that will inspire the next generation – minus the stirring music that normally plays in the background.

Second day

Wake up early. OK admit you didn’t really sleep. Nerves/excitement.  Put on your suit for first time in a while. Write note to lose that summer weight.  Get to school way too early. Meet year 7 and year 11.  More nerves.  Try to bond over music. Regret asking what music they like. Find out year 7 don’t watch tv.  More nerves. Get to room and start pacing. Remember everything from your ITT year (good and bad). Open your door.  Smile – “good morning Year 7, I’m your teacher”.  Nerves gone.
